director statement
Who is Medusa? The female monster with snakes for hair who can turn onlookers to stone? A lesser known version is that was she a mortal woman who was then turned into a monster as punishment for her own sexual assault. Over millennia, Medusa has been a monster, a victim and now - in contemporary culture - she’s being hailed a feminist icon.
What I take from the myth of Medusa is how quick we are to make mythologies out of others to serve our own narratives because that’s easier than understanding people in all their complex, multi-faceted and contradictory selves.
As a filmmaker, I'm drawn to subjects that are overlooked and misunderstood. Films for me are existential in nature - a way to explore expressions of myself that I would otherwise be too afraid to show - it’s my way of feeling understood and better understanding others. Taking inspiration from Medusa, I hope others can embrace the parts of themselves that other shun and cannot understand and become a little bit more whole in the process.
Creatively, WHAT GOES ROUND draws inspiration from the work of ANDREA ARNOLD (Wasp, Fish Tank), JONATHAN GLAZER (Under the Skin), JULIA DUCOURNAU (Titane) and DAVID LYNCH. I wanted to create a film driven by feeling rather than clear plot, for the audiences to question their assumptions of who (or what) the main character is - the point is not to label her but to show her as a complex and ineffable being. The film is dark and playful, unsettling and empowering - it a genre blend that embraces contradiction and catharsis.
